Archangels

Archangels – are the Guardian Angels of nations and countries. They concern themselves with politics and the military, commerce and trade. There are said to be seven Archangels which include Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Suriel. Aniel and Zadakiel. Gabriel and Michael are mentioned in the New Testament.

The Archangel Gabriel is said to be the messenger of God and his name is interpreted as ‘The Strength Of God’. His actions are recorded in Jewish Scriptures, but he also crosses into other religions. In the Christian religion it is believed that at the Last Judgement he will blow a sacred trumpet horn. He is also the patron saint of broadcasters, telecommunications workers, diplomats, messenger postal workers and stamp collectors as he is believed to be a communicator and mediator between Heaven and Earth.

PRAYER TO ARCHANGEL GABRIEL

Alleged to Help in Communication and Conception

Beloved Gabriel,
Glorious Messenger of the Court of Heaven
and most excellent Saint and Archangel,
first minister of God,
interpreter for Daniel the Prophet,
instructor of Zachary the Priest,
annunciator to our Holy Mother Mary,
bringer of the word of truth:Please favor my devotions and help me to love and serve you, and, through you, to love and serve the Lord.O Gabriel Archangel, grant me what I most earnestly desire and humbly ask for with this prayer, for the honor, glory, and fulfillment of my soul.

Amen.

Gabriel first appears in the Book Of Daniel, delivering explanations of Daniel’s visions. In the Gospel of Luke he foretells the births of both John The Baptist and of Jesus.

‘And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared. And Zechariah said to the angel,“How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” And the Angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” Luke 1:10

Gabriel is mentioned again when he returns some months later

‘In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin? The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. ‘ Luke 1:26-38

In Latter Day Saint theology he is thought to have once lived as a mortal on Earth as the prophet Noah and the two are thought to be one and the same. He is thought by some to be androgynous.

Michael is an Archangel in both Jewish, Christian and Islamic teachings. In the New Testament, Michael leads God’s armies against the forces of Satan in the Book Of Revelations, where he defeats Satan during the war in heaven. Michael was first seen as a healing angel and then a protector and leader of God’s army against the forces of evil. In the Old Testament, Daniel has a vision after a period of fasting.

‘But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me: and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days; for the vision is yet for [many] days:and when he had spoken unto me according to these words, I set my face toward the ground, and was dumb. And, behold, one in the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by reason of the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I retain no strength. For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither was there breath left in me.Then there touched me again one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me.And he said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he spake unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I am come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I go forth, lo, the prince of Greece shall come. But I will tell thee that which is inscribed in the writing of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me against these, but Michael your prince.’ Daniel 10:13-21

Later, Daniel is told about the role of Michael during the time of the End, when there will be “distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations” and that “ at that time Michael, the great Prince who protects your people, will arise“.

In the Book Of Revelation 12: 7-9 there is mention of a war in heaven in which Michael, being stronger, defeats Satan.

“…there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.”

Raphael – (It is God who heals) is an Angel of healing

Suriel – is mainly identified with Judaism and is one of the four holy Archangels who is of eternity and trembling. He is also a benevolent angel of death. He was sent to retrieve the soul of Moses.

Haniel – is seen as a feminine Angel with a beautiful energy. Her name means ‘Grace of God’.

Zadakiel – ‘Righteousness of God’ is the Archangel of freedom, benevolence and Mercy. He is the Patron Angel of all who forgive. He is one of the two standard bearers who follow directly behind Michael as he enters into battle.
